WHO:
Somos America is an Arizona coalition of over 30 faith based, activist, day-laborer, and human rights organizations in Arizona. Somos is coordinating the opposition to S.B.1070. Somos member organizations have been involved in every action against the legislation since its introduction in the Arizona Legislature. Somos member “Puente” is the lead organization in the mega march planned for May 29th in Phoenix.

THE ECONOMIC SANCTIONS COMMITTEE OF SOMOS has the responsibility to maximize the impact of the world wide boycott of Arizona. The single goal of the committee is to assist in the repeal of S.B.1070 as quickly as possible. To that end The Committee is asking that artists from outside the state not perform in Arizona.

THE STATEMENT:

Alfredo Gutierrez, the Chairman of the Economic Sanctions Committee of Arizona today congratulated all of the artists who have joined thesoundstrike.net . Gutierrez said “we particularly appreciate Zack de la Rocha and all the other cutting edge artists who join us in this sacrifice to overturn S.B.1070. We are deeply grateful. We know that this may mean significant income to the signators, we know that they stand in solidarity with the busboys, waiters, laborers, hotel workers who are already sacrificing because of the boycott. It is important that they know that the latino community of Arizona recognizes their sacrifice.”

Gutierrez further said “boycott’s are the blunt instrument of public policy. When sanctions came to South Africa or the boycott to Birmingham it was the poor and the black that bore the burden. The Arizona boycott is being borne by the Latino community..but it is a sacrifice we bear with pride. We will not be humiliated by 1070. We will not tolerate it.”
